Handwritten lists, a patchy overview, growing volumes: the Kapfenberg terminal faced the choice between muddling through and making a fresh start. With smartTOS it digitised its entire operation, from yard to train handling.
From analogue handling to real-time control
Starting point
For a long time, the Kapfenberg terminal worked with analogue methods: processes were handled manually, information was recorded by hand, and the overview of stock levels and vehicle positions was patchy. At the same time, transport volumes and customer requirements kept growing. A future-proof system was needed.
Solution
With smartTOS, the terminal introduced modular terminal software tailored to intermodal hubs. Since then, all workflows, from yard management and train dispatch to truck management, have been running digitally and in real time:
- Real-time overview of all movements at the terminal
- Digital control of train movements and lifting orders
- Mobile devices replace paper lists
- Better planning, fewer errors, faster processes
- Seamless interfaces to partners, systems and sensors
Result
Digitalisation brought not only efficiency but also new opportunities to scale: by expanding storage areas and cooperating with shipping lines, the terminal established itself as an important hub in intermodal transport.
